Overview
Betnovate 20gm cream contains betamethasone valerate, a prescription strength topical corticosteroid. It is used for short courses on steroid responsive skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and some forms of psoriasis. The medicine calms redness, swelling, and itch so the skin can settle and heal. It is for external use only and should be used exactly as your clinician prescribes.
What it treats
Clinicians use Betnovate 20gm cream on inflamed, non infected rashes that typically respond to steroids. These include atopic eczema, contact dermatitis from irritants or allergens, nummular eczema, lichen simplex, and localized psoriasis plaques on body skin. It is not for acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, untreated
skin infections, or open wounds. Facial use, skin folds, and the groin require special caution and usually very short courses.
How it works Betnovate 20gm
Inflamed skin releases chemical signals that drive itch and redness. Betamethasone switches off those signals inside skin cells, easing swelling and irritation. When symptoms quiet down, scratching tends to stop, which further protects the skin barrier and reduces the cycle of flare and damage.
How to apply Betnovate 20gm
- Use on clean, dry skin. Wash hands before and after.
- Apply a thin film to the affected area once or twice daily as prescribed. A fingertip unit (from the tip of an adult finger to the first crease) covers roughly a palm sized area.
- Gently massage until absorbed. Do not use tight or occlusive dressings unless your clinician tells you to.
- Avoid eyes, mouth, and broken skin. Take extra care on thin skin areas such as the face, groin, and armpits; many clinicians limit these areas to 3 to 5 days, if used at all.
- When the flare settles, reduce frequency or stop as directed. Do not restart repeatedly without medical advice.
What to expect
Many people notice less itch within 24 to 72 hours. Redness and thickened patches usually improve across the first week. If there is no improvement after 7 days (or sooner if the rash worsens or signs of infection appear), contact your healthcare professional. For psoriasis, your clinician may set a clear stop date to reduce rebound risk.
Possible side effects Betnovate 20gm
Most effects are mild and improve when you reduce or stop the medicine:
- Burning, stinging, dryness, or irritation where applied
- Skin thinning, easy bruising, stretch marks, visible small blood vessels, or changes in skin color with prolonged or heavy use
- Steroid acne, folliculitis, or increased hair growth at the site
- Worsening of undiagnosed infection beneath the cream
- Rare systemic absorption effects with long or extensive use, especially under occlusion or in children
Stop and seek advice if you develop strong or persistent irritation, spreading redness, pus, fever, or any sign of allergy.
Important warnings
- For external use only. Keep out of eyes and off mucous membranes.
- Do not use on untreated bacterial, fungal, or viral skin infections (impetigo, ringworm, cold sores, shingles, chickenpox).
- Children absorb more steroid through the skin; use the smallest amount for the shortest time, only under medical supervision. Avoid routine use under diapers.
- Tell your clinician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have diabetes, poor circulation, or a history of steroid side effects.
- Using on large areas or under occlusion increases absorption and side effects. Follow the exact plan given by your prescriber.
Interactions and layering
Topical
betamethasone has few drug interactions, but product layering matters.
- Do not stack with another potent steroid on the same area.
- If you also use medicated antifungal or antibiotic creams, apply them at a different time of day as instructed.
- Leave 10 to 15 minutes between Betnovate 20gm and moisturizers to reduce dilution.
- Strong exfoliants (retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, alpha or beta hydroxy acids) may sting when layered; use only if your clinician approves.
Who should not use
Do not use if you are allergic to betamethasone or any component of the cream. Avoid on acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, viral lesions, or extensively broken skin. People with widespread psoriasis should be managed by a specialist, as steroids can sometimes trigger rebound or pustular flares.
Storage and handling
Store at room temperature, away from direct heat and light. Keep the cap tightly closed. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use the cream past the expiration date or if the color or texture changes.
Quick Questions and Answer
Can I use it with my moisturizer?+
Yes. Apply Betnovate 20gm first, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then use a plain moisturizer.
What if I miss a dose?+

Use only if clearly needed, on small areas, for the shortest time. Avoid applying on the breast area before nursing. Discuss your plan with your clinician.
